EMS & AI Case Reviews

More than 25 years ago, I served as the EMS Training Officer at the Sheridan Fire District in northwest Oregon. Each month, we held a Wednesday night training session with our Physician Advisor, Dr. Ric Pardini. I once told Dr. Pardini those evenings were the highlight of my month. He quipped that I must lead a rather dull life. In truth, it was quite the opposite.

 

By day, I worked as regional faculty for the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), teaching and evaluating instructors and programs across Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. The AHA curriculum—rigorous by design—left little room for creativity in the classroom. Outside of that role, I taught EMS recertification, as well as courses for hospital and university students in a range of subjects.

 

What drew me in most were the EMS recertification classes—and the challenge they presented. For many providers, recertification meant five days of eight-hour lectures: talking heads at the front of the room and a room full of exhausted learners fighting to stay awake. It wasn’t effective, and it wasn’t engaging.

 

There was a better way, and I learned it from Dr. Pardini: teach entirely through case reviews.

 

Real cases demand real decisions. They invite critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and teamwork. They mirror the complexity and urgency of the field. That approach—case-driven, decision-focused, and grounded in patient outcomes—is how this program was born.
